Supernovas and the Expansion of the Universe – Dr. Mark Phillips

April 18, 2019 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

Dr. Mark Phillips
FSU College of Medicine Durell Peaden Auditorium
Director Emertius of the Las Campanas Observatory of the Carnegie Institution for Science

The Lannutti Lecture is an annual and prestigious event typically held in the fall in honor of Dr. Joseph Lannutt, a renowned faculty member in the FSU Physics Department. Following his passing, the Lannutti family established an endowment to fund what is now known as the Lannutti Lecture. In partnership with TSS, the Physics Department selects a physicist who has made international contributions to the field of physics.

This year, we feared we would not be able to host our annual event. However, we realized that we had a candidate for the award in Dr. Mark Phillips, a visiting scientist in the FSU Physics Department. We felt we could not let him leave town without extending this invitation for a public talk. He is a world class observation cosmologist with a primary research focus in type Ia supernova explosions used to determine the expansion rate of the universe.
