March 28 FAMU-FSU College of Engineering Field Trip

March 28 (Friday afternoon) at 2PM. Register at Eventbrite.

Please join us for a private tour of two prized programs at the FAMU/FSU College of Engineering. The first stop will be the Florida Center for Advance Aero-Propulsion (FCAAP) for the first hour (2-3) and the second will be the Center of Intelligent, Systems, Control, Operations, and Robotics (CISCOR) for the second hour (3-4). Register HERE.

The principal focus of FCAAP is on aerospace and aviation research and technology, and FCAAP’s efforts in this industry are having a major impact on Florida and the entire nation. FCAAP includes a wide array of state of the art laboratories and facilities  that we will see and learn about listed HERE. Our tour guide for FCAAP will Dr. Alex Karns, Research Engineer.

The vision of CISCOR is to use state-of-the-art technology to develop practical solutions to problems in systems, control, and robotics for applications in industry and government. Our tour guide will be Dr. Christian Hubicki, who studies the science and engineering of walking and running. His research on how robots get around in human environments teaches a lot about how people balance and walk and run. Hubicki will use all of this information to create devices that assist people who have lost the ability to walk to help them walk again.

Neighborhood Camp Fairs

TSS Board member Ilya Litvak has organized two “camp fairs” for this spring.

March 1st: the fair for grades 6-12 will be held at Fairview Middle School. This Neighborhood Camp Fair event has a focus on internship opportunities as well as pre-college summer programs at TSC, FSU, and FAMU. Good opportunities await for middle and high school students ! See TSS Calendar of Events.

March 22nd: event for grades K-8 will be held March 22nd at Pineview Elementary School. This event will feature an indoor science and arts festival where camp vendors provide hands-on activities to encourage student participation in their respective camps. Students and their families learn about camps, enjoy a day of science, and find camp registration information. See TSS Calendar of Events.

FSU molecular biologist honored by Tallahassee Scientific Society

BY: KENDALL COOPER – Florida State University News

A Florida State University researcher has been recognized by the Tallahassee Scientific Society for his commitment to science education and outreach and his contributions to science. Professor of Biological Science Jonathan Dennis received the 2024 Gold Medal Award, which has been presented annually since 2004 to a scientist from Tallahassee and the greater Big Bend region for exemplary career achievement and an outstanding dedication to science education and outreach.

“As it sank in that I won the Gold Medal Award, I felt deeply honored to be recognized in this manner alongside previous winners who are inspirations to me,” Dennis said. “It drives me to continue pushing myself to contribute to research and scientific teaching in ways that make a positive impact.”

Most of the award’s 21 recipients have been FSU faculty, staff or alumni, including the late Robert O. Lawton Distinguished Professor and Professor Emeritus Michael Kasha and the late Sir Harold Kroto, Nobel Laureate and the driving force behind FSU’s Global Educational Outreach for Science, Engineering and Technology program.

Dennis received the award Thursday, Jan. 23, at the Challenger Learning Center of Tallahassee. Following the award presentation, Dennis kicked off the TSS’ annual Horizon Speaker Series with a presentation on the promise of epigenetics and precision medicine.
