The winner will be invited to present at a public award ceremony in January 2025.
Adventures In and Around Tallahassee!
Field trips are Fun! And educational! But TSS needs your help in lining up some very cool events this year. So please provide your input here: THIS FORM to let us know which opportunities you are most interested in. Select as many of these are you would like to participate in: Marianna Caverns, Gulf Specimen Aquarium, All About Coffee at Ology Midtown, a mushroom nursery tour, Orchard Pond Organic Farm, the FAMU-FSU College of Engineering, and a MagLab private tour. Our field trips are usually Saturday morning (but not always), family friendly, expert-led outings. They are announced first to TSS members by email and later to the general public if spaces remain. Past trips have focused on karst geology, astronomy, archaeology, dinosaur paleontology, quarry fossil-hunting, visits to Tall Timbers Research Station, and the Hopkins Power Plant. Come join us and get to know some other members! Let your voice by heard – complete the survey at FIELD TRIP SURVEY.
HORIZONS 2025!
We are excited to present the 2025 line-up of guest speakers starting with the Gold Medal Award presentation and reception. Speaker and date to be announced!
The other three guest speakers will include a veteran environmental reporter, Jenny Staletovich from WLRN and other national reporting forums; the 2024 Robert O. Lawton recipient, Dr. Harrison Prosper; and the new MagLab Director, Dr. Kathleen Amm. This will be a tough season to beat! Tickets available soon.
November 10th Annual Meeting and Guest Bartending Fun-Raiser
A grand time was had by Ology patrons and TSS members! We raised $370 for the 2025 spring season of teacher mini-grants. The members approved the new slate of officers and board members: Martin Brenner – President; Carol Zimmerman – VP and Acting Secretary; Kerry Maddox – Treasurer; General Board Members: Todd Bevis, Barry Boerner, Shirin Djemgou, Chris Harvey; Susan Vinson, Alan Hanstein (new), Michael Ledyard (new), Brittany Lindsay (new), and Tamya Pinkey (new). (We really just moved the chess pieces around this year as we are rebuilding our board after recent losses.) The new officers will start their roles January 1, 2025.
2025 Lannutti Memorial Lecture Series
Co-sponsored with FSU Department of PhysicsTallahassee Scientific Society and the FSU Department of Physics continued the tradition of honoring the legacy of Dr. Joseph Lannutti with an annual lecture series consisting of a public talk hosted by TSS and a Physics Department Colloquium. Read more about Dr. Lannutti here. This year, the recipient of the Lannutti Award was Dr. Ayana Arce from Duke University. The title of her fabulous talk was Artificial Intelligence and the Fate of the Universe. Right, Dr. Arce is receiving the Lannutti plaque from Dr. Maddox, TSS President.
Photos from the Last 2024 EUREKA Event
We hope that you were able to enjoy at least one of the “Eureka!” events this past fall. Todd Bevis created and presented this one-of-a-kind adult science education program in partnership with the FSU Office of STEM Learning and the Leon County Public Library. People from all ages and stripes kept showing up for “Todd Talks” Monday nights in September, October and November. THANK YOU, TODD!
Stay tuned for news of the Spring Series of Eureka!
