Science Education for Teens

newblastLast year your society started a new program in partnership with the Leon County Public Library and the Leon County Public Schools. The objective is to make our teens aware of science and its application to every day life.

The program is called the 2nd Saturday Science Lab and is held once a month at the Leroy Collins (downtown) Public Library’s program room. It starts at 2:00 pm and lasts one to 1 and 1/2 hours and consists of a presentation by a scientist and a hands-on lab. The lab involves the ideas presented in the lecture.

Topics have ranged from a presentation on DNA and analyzing the DNA of a strawberry to a presentation of ocean movements and a demonstration on how movements affect the landscape.

Another topic dealt with Robotics and the hands-on lab consisted of programming LED circuitry to demonstrate how timing of traffic lights is accomplished.

We are looking for volunteers to make presentation and bring hands-on practicums to this program. If you have an idea for a presentation or know of a colleague or friend who would be a good presenter, let us know and we will work with the person to schedule a presentation.
