Unchained:

Unchained: A Long Way Home at 6 PM on Thursday, April 9 at Challenger Learning Center! Stay after the film for a Q&A with Carol Buckley and filmmaker Alex Rivera. This documentary was shot on location in Nepal and follows the transformative work of Carol Buckley and Elephant Aid International (EAI) to improve the welfare of captive elephants. Through peaceful, hands-on collaboration with local mahouts (elephant handlers), Carol leads a chain-free, pain-free revolution, demonstrating that there is a better way to care for elephants in human captivity. This event is free and open to the public. (This is a CLC-sponsored event.)

Plan C for Civilization: free screening of documentary film

April 14 at 7:30PM

TSS members are invited to a screening of Plan C for Civilization, a documentary about the debates and ethics of climate science/climate science technologies. The event is scheduled for April 14 at 7:30PM (the doors will open at 7PM) at the Reubin O’D. Askew Student Life Center (924 Learning Way, Tallahassee, FL., 32304). The film discusses the debate behind environmental, technological, and ethical aspects of climate intervention strategies. There will be a Q&A session with the director of the film following the screening. SciSalon: Adventures of an Internship Program through Conservation Pathways

April 16 at 6PM at the Blue Tavern

Conservation Pathways is a local nonprofit that serves high school and college students interested in pursuing careers in conservation. They work with students from many backgrounds and interests to develop field research, communication, and professionalism skills.

Through these activities they also provide field trips to organizations and school groups to learn regional ecology, and help other non-profits fulfill their missions.

Come hear the Executive Director, Rebecca Means, talk about the work Pathways does in the community, the many pathways to conservation, and how you can get involved. Conservation Pathways interns also will be there to talk about their experiences with research projects like indigo snake reintroduction, Apalachicola River slough restoration, and more!

HORIZONS SPEAKER SERIES presents “Galactic Ecosystems: Engines of the Chemical Evolution of the Universe” with Dr. Massimo Marengo

Join TSS for the last Horizons of 2026 with Dr. Massimo Marengo, FSU Physics, as he guides us through the Milky Way, our own galaxy. This presentation by Dr. Massimo Marengo, is a journey in space as well as time. We start by visiting the different environments of the Milky Way, and seeing how they are all interconnected, as if the Galaxy were a living ecosystem. We learn how a complex system like the Milky Way came to be, from its birth in the Dark Ages of the Universe to the present day.

Galaxies and their inner components such as stars nebulae and the supermassive black holes lurking at their cores, orchestrate a complex dance that transforms the Universe. Like the Milky Way, all galaxies are the engines that forge its elements, from the primordial hydrogen and helium formed shortly after the Big Bang, to the rich variety we find on Earth and within us. (Students are free.)

Horizons 2026: Biological Batteries with Rocks In Their Head

On March 25th, Jack Rudloe enthralled the audience at Horizons with stories about the Gulf Specimen Marine Laboratory, an iconic marine science aquarium located in Panacea, FL. For this presentation, Jack spoke about the quirky mystery behind why electric eels have rocks in their heads and how these rays produce their shock. He revealed some of the unique discoveries he made after years of research into these bizarre critters that nobody seems to know anything about.
